Chapter 7
Verse 1
Confucius said,” To relate and not to invent, to believe in and to be devoted to antiquity. Permit me to compare myself to Lao Peng.”
子曰:“述而不作,信而好古,窃比于我老彭。”
Verse 2
Confucius said,” To gain knowlege quietly, to learn without losing interest, to instuct others relentlessly, what difficulty for me?”
子曰:“默而识之,学而不厌,诲人不倦,何有于我哉?”
Verse 3
Confucius said,” Virtue not cultivated, learning not expounded, not able to accommodate righteousness having heard of it, not able to correct what is not good... they trouble me.”
子曰:“德之不修,学之不讲,闻义不能徙,不善不能改,是吾忧也。”
Verse 4
At leisure Confucius was sedate and tranquil.
子之燕居,申申如也,夭夭如也。
Verse 5
Confucius said,” How weak I have become! For a long time I have not dreamed about the Duke of Chou.”
子曰:“甚矣吾衰也!久矣吾不复梦见周公。”
Verse 6
Confucius said,” Aspire to the way, align with virtue, abide by benevolence, and immerse yourself in the arts.”
子曰:“志于道,据于德,依于仁,游于艺。”
Verse 7
Confucius said,” I have yet to not instruct even someone who comes with a small bundle of dried meat.”
子曰:“自行束修以上,吾未尝无诲焉。”
Verse 8
Confucius said,” Without determination, there can be no revelation, without anxiety to express convictions, there can be no illumination. To have one corner identified and not be able to revert by identifying the other three: there can be nothing further.”
子曰:“不愤不启,不悱不发,举一隅不以三隅反,则不复也。”
Verse 9
When Confucius was eating with a mourner, he never satiated himself. On that day, the Master wept, and did not sing.
子食于有丧者之侧,未尝饱也。于是日哭,则不歌。
Verse 10
Cofucius said to Yen Yuen,” Implementing it when employed and keeping it safe when not only you and I do so!” Tzu said,” If my Master led the three armies who would be with you?” Confucius said,” Not the man who would die without remorse fighting a tiger or braving a river, but the man who would be devoted to planning and accomplishing tasks which he approaches with fear.”
子谓颜渊曰:“用之则行,舍之则藏,唯我与尔有是夫!”子路曰:“子行三军,则谁与?”子曰:“暴虎冯河,死而无悔者,吾不与也。必也临事而惧,好谋而成者也。”
Verse 11
Confucius said,” If riches could be acquired, I would be willing to become even a whip holder. Since they cannot be acquired, I follow that to which I am devoted.”
子曰:“富而可求也,虽执鞭之士,吾亦为之。如不可求,从吾所好。”
Verse 12
Confucius was prudent about abstinence, war aand illness.
子之所慎:齐,战,疾。
Verse 13
While in Ch’i, Confucius heard Shao. For three moons he did not know the taste of meat. He said,” I never imagined that music could attain such.”
子在齐闻韶,三月不知肉味。曰:“不图为乐之至于斯也!”
Verse 14
Jan Yu said,” Is the Master for the lord of Wei?” Tzu Kung said,” I will ask him.” He then entered and said ,” What sort of men were Po Yi and Shu Ch’i?” Confucius said,” Virtuous men of ancient times.” Tzu Kung said,” They sought and attained benevolence. What complaint could they have?” Tzu Kung departed and said,” The Master is not for him.”
冉有曰:“夫子为卫君乎?”子贡曰:“诺。吾将问之。”入,曰:“伯夷、叔齐何人也?”曰:“古之贤人也。”曰:“怨乎?”曰:“求仁而得仁,又何怨。”出,曰:“夫子不为也。”
Verse 15
Confucius said,” Simple meals, write to drink, bent elbow for pillow: therein is happines. Riches and position without righteousness are to me as the floating clouds.”
子曰:“饭疏食饮水,曲肱而枕之,乐亦在其中矣。不义而富且贵,于我如浮云。”
Verse 16
Confucius said,” Give me a few more years to learn at the age of fifty, and I will be unlikely to have major faults.
子曰:“加我数年,五十以学易,可以无大过矣。”
Verse 17
Confucius spoke ya: for poetry, books, and performing the rites, he always spoke ya.
子所雅言,诗、书、执礼,皆雅言也。
Verse 18
The duke of Yeh asked Tzu Lu about Cofucius. Tzu Lu did not reply. Confucius said,” Why did you not say:’ He is a man whose determination makes him forget to eat, whose happiness makes him forget his trouble and who knows not that old age is stealing upon him’.”
叶公问孔子于子路,子路不对。子曰:“女奚不曰,其为人也,发愤忘食,乐以忘忧,不知老之将至云尔。”
Verse 19
Confucius said,” I was not born knowlegeable, I am devoted to antiquity and quick to seek knowlege.”
子曰:“我非生而知之者,好古,敏以求之者也。”
Verse 20
Confucius did not talk about prodigies, force,disorders and gods.
子不语怪,力,乱,神。
Verse 21
Confucius said,” When three men walk together, there is always something I can learn. Choose to follow what is good in them and correct what is not good.”
子曰:“三人行,必有我师焉。择其善者而从之,其不善者而改之。”
Verse 22
Confucius said,” My virtue is from heaven. What can Human T’ui do to me?”
子曰:“天生德于予,桓魋其如予何?”
Verse 23
Confucius said,” My pupils, do you think that I conceal anything? I conceal nothing from you. I do not act without my pupils. This is Ch’iu.”
子曰:“二三子以我为隐乎?吾无隐乎尔。吾无行而不与二三子者,是丘也。”
Verse 24
The four teachings of Confucius: literature, conduct , loyalty and trustworthiness.
子以四教:文,行,忠,信。
Verse 25
Confucius said,” I have not yet met a sage. I would accept meeting a gentleman.” Confucius said,” I have not yet met an altruistick man. I would accept meeting a man of principles. To have no taken as to have, to be vacant taken as to be filled, to be in adversity taken as to be at peace, it is difficult indeed to be principled.”
子曰:“圣人,吾不得而见之矣;得见君子者,斯可矣。”子曰:“
善人,吾不得而见之矣;得见有恒者,斯可矣。亡而为有,虚而为盈,约而为泰,难乎有恒矣。”
Chapter 7
Verse 26
In fishing, Confucius did not use a net. In following, Confucius did not shoot at a roosting bird.
子钓而不纲,弋不射宿。
Verse 27
Confucius said,” There are men who invent what they do not know. I do not. To listen extensively., to choose to follow what is good, to observe extensively to gain knowledge, are next to knowledge.”
子曰:“盖有不知而作之者,我无是也。多闻择其善者而从之,多见而识之,知之次也。”
Verse 28
It was difficult to talk with the people of Hu Hsiang. The disciples were perplexed when a boy was received. Confucius said,” I am for his advancement, not for his regression. Is that too much? When a person cleaness himself in order to advance, be for his cleaning without vouching for his past.”
互乡难与言,童子见,门人惑。子曰:“与其进也,不与其退也,唯何甚!人洁己以进,与其洁也,不保其往也。”
Verse 29
Confucius said,” Is benevolence so far away? I wish for benevolence, and benevolence is attained.”
子曰:“仁远乎哉?我欲仁,斯仁至矣。”
Verse 30
A szu pai of Ch’en asked, ” Does Duke Chao know the rites?” Confucius said,” He knows the rites.” Confucius retired. The szu pai greeted Wu-Ma Ch’i, showed him in, and said, ” I have heard that the gentleman does not take sides. Does the gentleman take sides? The lord married someone from Wu who shares his surname, and referred to her as Wu Meng Tzu. If the lord knows the rites, who does not know the rites?” Wu-Ma Ch’i reported this to Confucius who said, ” Ch’iu is fortunate. When I make a mistake people know about it.”
陈司败问昭公知礼乎?孔子曰:“知礼。”孔子退,揖巫马期而进之,曰:“吾闻君子不党,君子亦党乎?君取于吴为同姓,谓之吴孟子。君而知礼,孰不知礼?”巫马期以告。子曰:“丘也幸,苟有过,人必知之。”
Verse 31
In singing, when the song was good, Confucius would have it repeated, then joined in the singing.
子与人歌而善,必使反之,而后和之。
Verse 32
Confucius said,” In literature, I am barely comparable with others. But as to being a dedicated gentleman, this I have yet to attain.”
子曰:“文,莫吾犹人也。躬行君子,则吾未之有得。”
Verse 33
Confucius said,” Would I venture to call myself a sage or a benevolent man? At most, it might be said that I so pursue without losing interest and instruct others relentlessly.” Kung-Hsi Hua said,” This is what your disciples have not been able to learn.”
子曰:“若圣与仁,则吾岂敢?抑为之不厌,诲人不倦,则可谓云尔已矣。”公西华曰:“正唯弟子不能学也。”
Verse 34
Confucius was seriously ill. Tzu Lu asked to pray in his behalf. Confucius said,” Is it done?” Tzu Lu replied,” Yes. The ancient prayer was, ’ Pray thee to the gods and deities above and below’.” Confucius said,” Ch’iu has prayed so for a lomg time.”
子疾病,子路请祷。子曰:“有诸?”子路对曰:“有之。诔曰:‘
祷尔于上下神只。’”子曰:“丘之祷久矣。”
Verse 35
Confucius said,” With extravagance there is no humility, with frugality there is miserliness. Rather be miserly than without humility.”
子曰:“奢则不孙,俭则固。与其不孙也,宁固。”
Verse 36
Confucius said,” The gentleman is free and bountiful. The petty man is bound and grieving.”
子子曰:“君子坦荡荡,小人长戚戚。”
Verse 37
Confucius was gentle yet strict, awe-inspiring yet not fearful, and courteous yet at ease.
子温而厉,威而不猛,恭而安。
