Traffic jam-free day starts with traffic jamsThursday 09 October 2008 Today's traffic jam free day – the first in the Netherlands – began with 10 traffic jams by 6.30 this morning, reports the VID traffic information service. The first congestion formed shortly before 6am on the A12 between the east of the country. Some 80,000 people have signed up to take part in the traffic jam free day which is an initiative by motoring organisation ANWB, Dutch Rail and Rabobank. The ANWB was quick to point out that the first jam was caused by road works, but Nu.nl reports that this did not apply to most of the other jams. According to the VID, early morning hold-ups were about the same as normal and it expects the rest of the morning rush hour to be quieter than usual. The institute for mobility policy KiM has calculated that the total damage to the Dutch economy as a result of traffic jams was between €2.7bn and €3.6bn in 2007.
