About Indian Institute of Spices Research

The Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR), Calicut a constituent body of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is a major Institute devoted to research on spices. In 1976, it started as a Regional Station of the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI), Kasaragod engaged in research on spices.

A National Research Centre for Spices was established in 1986 with its headquarters at Calicut, Kerala by merging the erstwhile Regional Station of CPCRI at Calicut and Cardamom Research Centre at Appangala, Karnataka. Realising the importance of Spices Research in India this Research Centre was upgraded to Indian Institute of Spices Research on 1st July, 1995....More

Hortinformatics 2010

The Bioinformatics Centre of the Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) Calicut, hosted a two day National Consultative Meet on Bioinformatics in Horticulture from October 11-12 at the Institute campus. The meet, styled ‘Hortinformatics 2010’ was inaugurated by Dr. H P Singh, Deputy Director General of Horticulture, ICAR, New Delhi.
“Application of various bioinformatics tools should be well understood and explored by all the scientists to enhance their efficiency in fast expanding science of horticulture,” said Dr. HP Singh in his inaugural address. “In agriculture, the outcome of biotechnology and bioinformatics research must reach the resource poor farmers,” he added.... IISR bags outstanding Institution award
The Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR), Calicut, a premier institute under Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), has bagged the prestigious Sardar Patel Outstanding ICAR Institution Award for the year 2009. The award is given annually to two ICAR Institutes and one State Agricultural University (SAU) for the best performance in agricultural research, extension and education.
This is the second time IISR is being adjudged as the best ICAR institution. The Institute has bagged this coveted award in the year 1999 instituted by the Council in the name of Sardar Vallbhbhai Patel....More

IPS-SZ-SYMPOSIUM

The Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) 22, 23 October 2010 Human activities during recent years are altering greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere and causing global climate change that has an impact on agriculture including diseases of crop plants. These impacts will also be observed on other organisms as well as on other agroecosystem components. In view of the above, the theme of the symposium assumes greater significance. The two days’ seminar is being held at Indian Institute of Spices Research, Calicut (Kozhikode), Kerala which would deliberate on various aspects of climate change and its impact on diseases on various crops and develop strategies to counter the same.
