I saw a show on this once. Women's buttons are opposite from men's side (vise versa) because back then maids or servants would button a woman's buttons for her, so the buttons would be on the side facing the maids. Men didn't need servants to button their buttons so the buttons would be on the side more convient for the man to button them

Always wondered -never asked!

LIES!.. Poke references TV?!. show me a wikipedia article and i'll believe her then!..

wiki is not reliable...anyone can post something thatz totally false

None of the answers were right. Its only because women use the left side of their brain and men use the right side.

Just shows how traditions can die hard even long after the reasons for them are long gone.

Obviously Prismina is a man hater.. Must be she has been out smarted by a man for years and this is her only way to strike back.. Good luck in life Prismina.. you are sure to be a failure!

I always thought it was because of the man's adam's apple.

Well some men make their own clothes and have their buttons reversed. It ths thbecauseth they prether ith that wayth.

lol @ all the answers hidden due to their low ratings

Buttons were traditionally always right over left, but it was changed on men's clothing so that they could use a sword in the right hand and button with the left. In some traditional Jewish communities, the men's coats still button right over left.

boooooooooring...........

I've heard that men often had a valet dress them, and that was why the placement of the buttons were that way.

At least we know who's cloths is who's when we buy our cloths at the store.

Its also great to tell the difference between a woman's shirt and a men's when they look gender neutral and your doing a male and a female household members' laundry together. My dad and I used to wear about the same size and his clothes always ended up in my closet.

I also use that as a way of telling if my jeans are men's or women's. Because for a guy, it's not too easy to tell'em apart without looking at the buttons

I always wanted to know but never thought of asking the question myself! Thanks for sharing.

Hello every one this answer is not to be meant slanderous in any way just the truth as I have witnessed for my self through out the year s i have been living. Women's button holes are that way because of women's brains they are totally opposite from male.. don't believe it start to pay attention.

thats crazy ive never even noticed

YOU ARE AWESOME☺☻! I just got this account and i was wondering this but i wuz gonna ask then i saw it!

I'm pretty sure the practice originated back when carrying a sword was common, and they changed the buttons so that when unsheathing a sword, it would not get caught in the shirt. That's what I was told anyway.

Prismina, you rock! That made me laugh so hard, I nearly tooted!

all answers are incorrect. thanks again yahoo.

Why couldn't the maid stand on the other side of the lazy woman who can't button up her own clothes... It would have been more sensible and you could have the first type of "unisex" clothes!!

Rumor has it that man's buttons are meant to be there so he could unbotton his shirt while engaging in a sword fight.

its how the women used to button the clothes in the olden days

You saw this on HotForWords. That's the only show I can think of that I heard talking about this.
Also, your answer is false. The buttons of Men are on the right side so we can button them with our left hand and hold our swords with our right hand.

How exactly is a rainbow made?
How exactly does the sun set?
How exactly does the posi-trac
rear end on a Plymouth work?

It just does

Hmm, weird. Never heard that. Thanks for the answer!

wow never knew that =) x.

boooooooooorinnnnnng... Who cares?? it's only buttons.

Man, the best answer only shown how lazy women are. *sighs*

This is the best question ever. Women, am i right? High 5 men from all around the world.

Back WHEN, Poke? If you're gonna say "back then," you first need to introduce us to the specific period you're referring to. Back then, when... WHAT?

SD and Poke, that's assuming you're right-handed (I am), right? Ya've gotta specify that kind of thing, too.

Really interesting... I noticed this when I borrowed my boyfriends shirt.
Hahah, this is one of those random things we don't really think about, huh?

Stewie Griffin- women are not lazy. Thats not fair, most of them are hard working, and if it wasnt for them you wouldn't have typed that ridiculous comment. It depends on the person! Good god man you are not open minded ;]
Haha Prismina, thats funny (it makes a change from men being talented!) :)

I just did some research on this at a couple of library's and spoke to some historians as well. This is not correct at all, it's false!

It does go back to when men carried swords or other weapons. Most men are right handed, if they were wearing a cloak or coat that buttoned on the left, it would inhibit them reaching into their cloaks or coats to get their weapons. Women traditionally didn't carry weapons.

i have NEVER noticed this. I wish i was as observant as people who notice this. btw, i don't think the best answer is accurate. I liked VLD's answer.

I believe it was the button fairies, and this answer is so wrong!!! Men had servants to dress them too, so it sucks when that is BA. What about that then? HUH???

haha i didnt knew that

So many comments.LOL.. I've have always thought that they were opposite so the man could undo'em.Make's right handers facing a woman... gotta simplify things for us doncha know.lol

Ok now the next time you put a zip up jacket on look at the zipper really close. The part with the Pull tab are on the right for men and on the left for women. I used to work as a sewing inspector and i found this out then. I wonder if Second Hand Lion will have something smart to say about this too

well, if men unbuttoned that way, why didn't women just do it that way, too?
if there's no reason that woman's are opposite..

wow i didnt know that

What would that prove genius

lol all these anwers are wrong

so men can take them off faster xD

its also a good way to tell jeans apart, G-Star always do unisex, and then you can tell if their suited for mainly men or women :)

Jean Valjean- the side of the brain that men and women use has nothing to do with what some seamstress did hundreds of years ago.

Alex Daniels- Actually in American style denim mens and womens pants are usually all unisex. Dress pants and clothing inEurope still create a difference in closure types

It's because in the past, females were dressed by their mothers or nannies whereas males dressed themselves. It's easier to button yourself left over right whereas it's easier to button someone else it reverse.

Because men have to look in the mirror to do up their buttons, while women are talented enough to just do it. ;)
