A group of scientists from Sweden reached the conclusion that the level of collective immunity against the emerging corona virus, may be twice what was previously thought.
This group, from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, conducted an immunological analysis of samples from more than 200 patients with Covid-19, with mild symptoms, or completely asymptomatic. They found that group immunity to the virus can form even in people whose antibody tests are negative.
The Swedish group scientists believe that the reason for the failure of attempts to “measure” the level of immunity in the population, so far, is because the focus in the studies was on antibodies in particular.
The newspaper, “Daily Mail”, reported that the study, in addition to studying antibodies, focused attention on the level of T-lymphocytes, or T-cells in patients, and indicated that they play a crucial role in the formation of immunity to transmissible infectious diseases.
In addition, these cells store information about antigens that were previously working in the body, through which they form a rapid secondary immune response, to destroy dangerous pathogens that are often called, killers – T.
According to the results of the Swedish study, so-called “T-cell immunity” was found in 30% of healthy blood donors (who did not have the disease in question). Moreover, this immunity was two times higher, than that detected in the antibody-containing body.
This means that a large number of people possess protective properties against COVID-19, even though they are not infected with it, without knowing it.
